(Back to top) BACITRACIN (AK-Tracin®, Ocu-Tracin®) eye ointment is an antibiotic used to treat inflammation and infections of the eye. Generic bacitracin eye ointment is available. What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine? (Back to top) They need to know if you have any of these conditions: •an unusual or allergic reaction to bacitracin or products containing bacitracin (such as Polysporin® or Neosporin® ointment), neomycin, or any other antibiotic, medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives •pregnant or trying to get pregnant •breast-feeding How should I use this medicine? (Back to top) Bacitracin eye ointment is for use in the eye only. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Wash your hands before and after use. Tilt your head back slightly and pull your lower eyelid down with your index finger to form a pouch. Squeeze the end of the ointment tube to apply a thin layer of the ointment to the inside of the eyelid. Do not touch the eye or eyelid with the tip of the tube. Close the eye gently to spread the ointment. Do not use your medicine more often than directed. Finish the full course of medicine prescribed by your prescriber or health care professional even if you think your condition is better. Do not stop using except on your prescriber's advice. Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed. What if I miss a dose? (Back to top) If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, use only that dose. Do not use double or extra doses. What drug(s) may interact with bacitracin eye ointment? (Back to top) Do not use any other eye products without consulting your prescriber or health care professional. Tell your prescriber or other health care professional about all other medicines you are taking including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also, tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check before stopping or starting any of your medications. What side effects may I notice from using bacitracin eye ointment? (Back to top) Serious side effects are unlikely from using eye preparations. Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible: •burning, swelling, or itching of the eyelids (this may indicate an allergic reaction or an infection that does not respond to bacitracin) •chest tightness, or difficulty breathing •lower back pain •swelling of the lips or face Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome): •blurred vision •skin irritation What should I watch for while taking bacitracin eye ointment? (Back to top) Tell your prescriber or health care professional if the infection does not get better within 2 days. Do not use longer than 10 days unless instructed by your prescriber. After applying bacitracin eye ointment, blurred vision can occur, but usually only lasts a few minutes. A burning or stinging reaction that does not go away may mean you are allergic to this product. Stop using and call your prescriber or health care professional. If you wear contact lenses, ask your prescriber or health care professional when you can wear your lenses again before you use the product. To prevent the spread of infection, do not share eye products, or share towels and washcloths with anyone else. Throw away any unused eye ointment. Where can I keep my medicine? (Back to top) Keep out of the reach of children. Store at room temperature between 15°and 30°C (59°and 86°F). Protect from light. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
